The report reveals that Chicago drivers lose a staggering 112 hours annually due to peak traffic, which is 10 hours more than New York, the runner-up in this unfortunate contest. This lost time translates to a financial burden for individual drivers and the city as a whole. On average, Chicagoans spend $2,063 per year in lost time and productivity due to traffic, while the city incurs a massive $7.5 billion in losses.
But Chicago isn't alone in its struggle. Istanbul, a city known for its rich history, takes the top spot as the most congested city globally, with drivers losing a staggering 118 hours to traffic. Mexico City follows closely behind with 108 hours lost. These figures highlight a global trend, as the report notes that traffic congestion is worsening in most places worldwide.
The study, conducted by INRIX, utilized GPS data to track commutes and analyze the average speed of the 'last mile' for drivers' trips. In 2025, Chicago's average speed during the last mile of a trip was a mere 9 mph, which is slower than New York City's 11 mph and Istanbul's 13 mph. This slow speed contributes to the city's high congestion levels.
One of the most congested roads in Chicago is the outbound I-55 from the I-90 interchange, which ranks as the seventh-most congested road in the nation. Drivers on this route lose an average of 87 hours annually, highlighting the significant impact of traffic on daily commutes.
