Bold statement: A transformative moment in PNG’s pageantry crowned Yampela Popena of the Western Highlands as Miss Bird of Paradise PNG, spotlighting a blend of tradition, talent, and ambition. This event showcased how young women from across provinces step forward to represent their communities with pride.
Yampela Popena crowned Miss Bird of Paradise PNG
Popena claimed the top prize of K20,000, plus a return trip to Israel, a gold necklace and pendant, a bouquet, and automatic qualification to the Miss Pacific Islands Pageant and other international opportunities. In addition to the crown, she will engage in cultural activities and promotional visits throughout Papua New Guinea.
The First Runner-Up spot went to a contestant from Enga Province, who received K15,000 and a silver jewelry set. Miss East Sepik Province followed with K10,000. Miss Gulf Province earned K7,000, while all other finalists received K1,000 and silver pendants.
Among the major awards, the Western Highlands contestant dominated, capturing titles in the Pre-Pageant Interview, Miss Traditional, Sarong, and Best Talent categories. Miss Enga delivered strong performances in the One Minute Intro, Traditionally Inspired Dress, Best Designer, and Stage Interview.
Contestants representing Enga, Morobe, and Western Province shared the Minor Awards, each earning K2,000. Special accolades saw Miss Gulf and Miss Sandaun tie for the Entrepreneurship Award, while Miss Western Highlands added Best Float and an extra K5,000 to her total.
The pageant concluded on a celebratory note, emphasizing perseverance and cultural heritage — a night that honored every PNG woman who steps forward with confidence.
