The Cubs bolster their bench by signing a seasoned utility player to a Minor League contract with an invitation to Spring Training.
CHICAGO — On Tuesday, the Cubs added veteran depth to their roster by bringing aboard Scott Kingery, a versatile veteran who has spent parts of six MLB seasons with the Philadelphia Phillies (2018–2022) and the Los Angeles Angels (2025). The contract includes an invitation to big‑league Spring Training, giving Kingery a chance to compete for a spot with the major league club.
Kingery provides multiple backup options in the infield, capable of filling at second base, shortstop, and third base, and he also brings experience in the outfield. This aligns with Chicago’s offseason goal of strengthening bench depth behind the core group, with potential reinforcement at Triple‑A Iowa if needed.
Last season with the Angels, Kingery appeared in 19 games and went 4-for-27 at the plate. He hit .228 with a .686 OPS across 59 games with Triple‑A Salt Lake in 2025. Across his Major League career, he has compiled a .227 batting average and a .660 OPS over 344 games. His standout season came in 2019, when he produced 2.7 bWAR, 19 homers, 34 doubles, 55 RBIs, 15 stolen bases, and a .788 OPS for the Phillies.
At present, the Cubs’ starting infield is slated to feature Michael Busch at first base, Nico Hoerner at second, Dansby Swanson at shortstop, and Matt Shaw at third. In addition, infield prospects James Triantos and Pedro Ramirez were added to the 40-man roster last month and will be in spring camp for another look.
