The recent election of Zohran Mamdani as the mayor of New York City has sparked a wave of excitement and optimism among architects and designers. With a focus on housing and environmental issues, Mamdani's campaign has resonated deeply with the architecture community, offering a glimmer of hope for much-needed change and progress.
"There's an incredible buzz within the architecture and design circles," says Jesse Lazar, Executive Director of AIA New York. "We're eager to collaborate with Mayor-elect Mamdani to push forward our shared goals, such as increasing affordable housing, strengthening our commitment to sustainability, and enhancing our public spaces and transportation systems."
Mamdani, a 34-year-old state assemblyman from Queens and a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, secured his victory on November 5th, defeating former New York governor Andrew Cuomo. His emphasis on making the city's housing more affordable and his plans to improve the overall housing stock have caught the attention of architects, who see an opportunity to make a real impact.
"I'm incredibly excited and optimistic about Mamdani's election," shares Laurie Hawkinson, a New York architect and professor at Columbia. "As architects, it's our responsibility to translate the new administration's goals into tangible, built projects and infrastructure. We must address long-term climate challenges while creating innovative and resilient spaces."
Mamdani's platform includes ambitious plans to renovate 500 schools with renewable energy infrastructure and transform asphalt school yards into green spaces. David Erdman, a professor at Pratt and director of the Center for Climate Adaptation, believes that continuing and building upon existing climate initiatives is crucial. He highlights the planned Climate Exchange for Governors Island and the Department of Environmental Protection as key projects that should remain a priority.
"These initiatives are often overlooked but are vital as we transition to more sustainable building practices," Erdman explains. "We need innovative housing models that consider the needs of different generations and contribute to the broader community's well-being."
Erdman's vision for a more resilient and self-sufficient city aligns with Mamdani's focus on affordability. By adopting decentralized, campus-based infrastructure, New York could reduce its reliance on upstate water reservoirs, thereby lowering water and energy costs.
"Housing can be a smart way to achieve this decentralization," Erdman adds.
Mamdani's endorsement by New York state's mayor is also significant, especially for architects working across different levels of government. Claire, an architect and founder of WXY Studio, believes this openness bodes well for collaborative projects.
"Our most impactful work often involves city and state-level collaboration, especially when it comes to transit, housing, and infrastructure. New York is not just a city; it's a region, and innovative approaches require interagency cooperation."
As Mamdani prepares to take office in January 2026, the architecture community eagerly anticipates the opportunity to contribute to the city's transformation. With a shared vision for a more sustainable, resilient, and equitable New York, architects are poised to play a pivotal role in shaping the city's future.
