The rise of AI poses a critical challenge to the integrity of polling, with its ability to mimic human responses so convincingly that it's almost impossible to tell the difference. This revelation, uncovered by a recent Dartmouth University study, highlights a potential crisis for public opinion surveys and online research.
The Threat of AI Interference
The study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, demonstrates how large language models (LLMs) can manipulate public opinion surveys on a large scale. According to the researchers, these AI systems can impersonate human personas, evade detection methods, and systematically bias online survey outcomes with ease.
"This is a critical vulnerability in our data infrastructure," warns Sean Westwood, the study's author and an associate professor at Dartmouth. "It poses an existential threat to unsupervised online research."
The implications are far-reaching, especially in the context of crucial elections. AI-driven disinformation campaigns have already been identified in European elections, such as the recent Moldovan election, where online monitoring groups detected Russian-backed AI-driven disinformation.
Tricking the System: A Simple Yet Effective AI Tool
To test the vulnerability of online survey software, Westwood created an "autonomous synthetic respondent" - a simple AI tool with a 500-word prompt. This tool adopts a demographic persona with randomly assigned details like age, gender, race, education, income, and state of residence. It then simulates realistic reading times, generates human-like mouse movements, and types open-ended responses one keystroke at a time, complete with typos and corrections.
In over 43,000 tests, this tool fooled 99.8% of systems, making them believe it was a human respondent. It excelled at logic puzzles, bypassing traditional safeguards like reCAPTCHA with ease.
"These bots aren't crude; they think through each question like careful, real people, making the data look completely legitimate," Westwood explains.
The Impact on Trust in Survey Results
The study focused on the practical vulnerability of political polling, using the 2024 US presidential election as a case study. Westwood found that as few as 10 to 52 fake AI responses could have changed the predicted outcome of the election in seven top-tier national polls during the final week of campaigning.
Each of these automated responses would have cost as little as 5 US cents to deploy, making it an affordable and effective way to manipulate election outcomes.
The bots were even effective when programmed in languages like Russian, Mandarin, or Korean, producing flawless English answers. This opens the door for foreign actors with the resources to design even more advanced tools to exploit this vulnerability, the study cautions.
Scientific research is also at risk, as it heavily relies on survey data. Thousands of peer-reviewed studies are published annually based on data from online collection platforms. With survey data potentially tainted by bots, AI could poison the entire knowledge ecosystem, Westwood warns.
The Need for Action
The study calls for the scientific community to urgently develop new methods for collecting data that cannot be manipulated by advanced AI tools.
"The technology to verify real human participation exists; we just need the will to implement it," Westwood says. "If we act now, we can preserve the integrity of polling and the democratic accountability it provides."
