The road to glory in Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA) 1A Football is getting intense! Four teams remain, each battling for the ultimate prize: the state championship. But here's the burning question: Can anyone dethrone the defending champions?
The 1A State Football Playoffs have reached the semifinal stage, following a weekend of hard-hitting quarterfinal matchups. The final four teams vying for the coveted title are set. Get ready for some gridiron fireworks!
Leading the charge is the top-seeded Buena Vista, a team that has consistently dominated throughout the season. Joining them are the formidable No. 2 seed Limon, the always-dangerous No. 4 seed Centauri, and (surprise!) the No. 6 seed and defending state champion, Wray. Wray's journey as a lower seed makes their presence in the semifinals particularly compelling. Will their championship experience give them an edge?
The 1A State Championship game is scheduled to electrify the CSU Thunderbowl in Pueblo on November 29th at 1:30 p.m. Mark your calendars!
1A Semifinals Matchups:
(Dates and times to be announced)
- No. 1 Buena Vista vs. No. 4 Centauri
- No. 2 Limon vs. No. 6 Wray
These semifinal games promise to be epic clashes. Will Buena Vista's high-powered offense prove too much for Centauri? Can Limon's stout defense contain Wray's championship pedigree? These are the questions on everyone's minds.
1A Quarterfinals Results (Saturday, Nov. 15):
- No. 1 Buena Vista def. No. 8 Meeker, 40-14
- No. 2 Limon def. No. 10 Monte Vista, 50-14
- No. 4 Centauri def. No. 12 Highland, 26-0
- No. 6 Wray def. No. 3 Burlington, 50-14
The quarterfinals showcased some dominant performances. Buena Vista and Limon asserted their dominance with convincing wins, while Centauri's shutout victory demonstrated their defensive prowess. And this is the part most people miss: Wray's victory over Burlington as the lower seed proves that rankings aren't everything. Sometimes, heart and experience can trump seeding.
1A First-Round Results:

- No. 10 Monte Vista def. No. 7 Colorado Springs Christian, 21-0
- No. 12 Highland def. No. 5 Forge Christian, 41-35

- No. 6 Wray def. No. 11 Rye, 56-13
- No. 8 Meeker def. No. 9 Platte Valley, 41-18
The first round saw some expected results, but also a few upsets, proving that anything can happen in playoff football. For example, Highland defeating Forge Christian as the lower seed shows that underdogs can definitely bite.
But here's where it gets controversial... Is it fair that lower-seeded teams have to travel more, potentially impacting their performance? Some argue that home-field advantage is too significant in high school football. What do you think? Should the CHSAA consider a different seeding system that takes travel distance into account?
Now it's your turn! Which team do you think will win the 1A State Championship? Are you rooting for the defending champs, Wray, to pull off another underdog victory, or do you think one of the top seeds will prevail? Share your predictions and thoughts in the comments below!
